Newton's Cradle consists of a wooden platform with two metal rods on top. These rods have wires with five metal balls attached to them. If you let one ball touch the row, one ball will also bounce back on the other side. And so they keep moving for quite some time.

If you let two balls hit the row on one side, two balls will also bounce against the row on the other side. But what happens if you bounce three balls against the rest of the row? After all, there are only five balls... The inner ball joins the other two while bouncing and bounces back, so this one ball belongs to the left and then to the right row. So there are always the same number of balls bouncing back and forth.
