Product description

Photobook Gent in Kleur (Ghent in Colour) offers a unique insight into the rich history of the city of Ghent, coloured and remastered for the first time.

Gent in Kleur returns to the times when black-and-white photography managed to capture the city's stories. Times when colour only existed in the eyes of the citizens of Ghent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today, these unique archive images were coloured for the first time and collected in this book. They provide a journey back in time that defies all imagination.

The 1913 World Fair, Gent-Zuid railway station, more than 35 cinemas, all kinds of hustle and bustle in markets and squares, newspaper and croakery vendors, etc. Images where melancholy lurks around the corner are interspersed with hallucinatory scenes of an occupied city. That grey side of the city is also highlighted in Ghent in Colour. One sees soldiers and tanks thundering across the same Korenmarkt where a month later a circus is parading elephants, or workers forming an uprising in a rough industrial city full of cramped belays.

The combination between the authentic black-and-white photographs, the coloured-in version and a photograph of contemporary Ghent taken on the same spot makes history tangible and sometimes frighteningly close (or just barely).

These photos, from private and public archives, were collected by Korneel Bostyn. All images were digitally remastered and coloured. In this process, particular attention was paid to getting as close as possible to historical accuracy in terms of colour.
